Costly "Hospitals Over Horses" Court Battle

Author: Colin Craig 2014/06/03

Recently the provincial government lost a battle with the Manitoba Jockey Club, a non-profit organization that runs the Assiniboia Downs.

The government, while giving True North Sports and Entertainment a sweetheart VLT deal, claimed it was cutting back on the Jockey Club's VLT deal and choosing "hospitals over horses."

I'm not going to get into the actual spat (it's well documented) but what I will touch on are the legal costs.

According to documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, taxpayers picked up the tab for a whopping $324,869.27 for the failed attempt to choose "hospitals over horses."
